Kentucky riding
Horses built Kentucky's reputation, and the state has never stopped earning it. The Bluegrass Region around Lexington and Louisville is the center of the Thoroughbred world (board fences, deep pastures, historic estates), and the concentration of English riding, elite instruction, and serious boarding there is unmatched. Guest ranches, trail stables, riding academies, pack-trip outfitters, and training barns all find their footing somewhere between those manicured fields and the Appalachian foothills to the east.
The wilder half of the story plays out on public land. Daniel Boone National Forest in the east and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in the west open up long forested trail systems, and outfitters there run guided rides and pack trips past features like the Red River Gorge and Lake Cumberland. Riders who want remote country on horseback, not a groomed arena, head this direction.
