Common questions

A certified helmet is non-negotiable and protects the most critical area. A body protector is the logical next layer: it cushions the ribs, spine, and internal organs in the falls that are common while you're still learning balance. Many lesson barns now require or strongly encourage them, and trail riders value them because falls onto rocks, roots, or hard-packed ground are unpredictable. You can ride without one, but for the cost it buys a lot of confidence and real protection.

A foam body protector is always 'on', dense, articulated padding absorbs and spreads impact the moment you hit something. An air vest is a shell connected to your saddle by a lanyard; when you fall and the lanyard pulls free, a CO2 cartridge inflates an airbag around your torso (and on some models, the neck and hips) in roughly a tenth of a second. Air vests offer excellent coverage but require you to clip the lanyard every ride and replace the cartridge after deployment. Many serious riders wear an air vest over a foam vest for layered protection.

In the US, look for ASTM F1937 with SEI certification on foam body protectors. In the UK and Europe, the standard is BETA 2018 Level 3 (the purple label), which is the level recommended for general riding. For air vests, the newest equestrian-specific standard is France's NF S72-800:2022. Many inexpensive Amazon vests carry no certification at all: they still add padding, but they haven't been independently tested to disperse impact, which is why they sit in our budget tier.

Snugly. A correctly fitted vest sits about an inch above the rider's natural waist when seated and shouldn't ride up over the lower ribs. There should be no large gaps at the sides, and you should still be able to take a full breath and rotate your shoulders. Most quality vests use side lacing or hook-and-loop panels plus adjustable shoulders to dial in the fit. For growing kids, buy to fit now, not to 'grow into', because an oversized vest doesn't protect properly.

They're effective and increasingly popular with trail and endurance riders, but they come with responsibilities: you must attach the lanyard every time you mount, and the system only works if you fully separate from the horse. A slow slide-off or a fall where you stay tangled may not trigger it. For a beginner doing arena lessons, a certified foam vest is usually the smarter first purchase. An air vest makes the most sense once you're riding out regularly and want maximum coverage.

Foam body protectors are generally recommended for replacement after a significant impact or roughly every 3–5 years, as the foam compresses and degrades over time even with normal use and storage. Keep it out of extreme heat (don't leave it baking in a car or tack room), avoid crushing it, and store it flat or hung. Air-vest airbags can be reused after rearming with a fresh CO2 cartridge, but the vest itself should be inspected per the manufacturer's schedule.
