About California

California may be the only state where a rider can choose between redwood forest, ocean beach, alpine wilderness, and open desert without crossing a border. The Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley, the Pacific coastline, and the Southern California deserts each carry their own riding: redwood trails near Eureka, beach gallops in Santa Barbara County, hard desert country in Anza-Borrego. The regions run on different seasonal clocks, which means somewhere in the state, the riding is always good.

The industry is as big as the geography. Guest ranches run everything from working cattle drives to luxury resort stays. Trail-riding stables concentrate where the visitors do: around Yosemite National Park, in the Santa Monica Mountains outside Los Angeles, through the Sonoma and Napa wine country. Riding academies serve every level of rider, with deep rosters in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Orange and San Diego Counties, teaching English and Western disciplines side by side.

Horse owners have the state's full network of boarding and training barns to draw on, from small private setups to large commercial operations covering dressage, show jumping, reining, and cutting. The pack outfitters work the Sierra Nevada, leading multi-day strings into the John Muir Wilderness and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks, remote alpine lakes and granite passes that only a horse or your own boots will reach.

The equine culture runs deep and stays visible: rodeos, horse shows, the Rose Parade equestrians in Pasadena, competition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Add extensive public-land access and a climate that stays mild across much of the state, and California earns its standing, a place where casual riders and lifelong horsemen both find more than they can use.

    Unlike most states, California has no Equine Activity Liability Act and no statutory equine warning-sign requirement; horse-injury claims fall under the common-law assumption-of-risk doctrine. Many operators still post warning signs and require signed liability waivers. Riders should always be aware of the inherent risks involved with horses.

  • Out-of-State Horse Entry Requirements

    Horses entering California from another state or country must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued within 30 days of entry and a negative Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA/Coggins) test conducted within the previous 12 months. This is crucial for anyone bringing their own horse to a boarding facility, guest ranch, or trail head.

  • Helmet Requirement for Minors

    California Vehicle Code Section 21300 requires any person under 18 years of age riding an equestrian animal on a paved highway to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet meeting ASTM or CPSC standards. Many riding academies and stables extend this requirement to all minors on their property for safety reasons.
