Western / Reining in Illinois

Illinois riding splits cleanly in two, and neither half looks like the flat farm state on the license plate. The north, ringed around Chicagoland, runs on polish: serious riding academies, well-appointed boarding facilities, and forest preserve trail systems that put real mileage within reach of the suburbs. Lessons, training, and competition dominate here, in English and Western barns alike. Drive south and the ground itself changes, and so does the riding.

Southern Illinois belongs to the Shawnee National Forest, and the Shawnee belongs to trail riders. Rolling hills, sandstone bluffs, lakes like Lake Glendale and Cedar Lake, and formations like Garden of the Gods give outfitters and trail-riding stables terrain worth building a business on. Guided rides push through dense hardwoods and along the water, and the whole experience runs rustic, a different country from the mirror-polished arenas up north.
