About New York

New York holds more horse country than the skyline lets on. The Adirondack peaks in the north, the Finger Lakes' long ridges in the west, the Hudson Valley's farmland in between: riders here move between dense forest, river valleys, and open agricultural ground, from wilderness trails suited to pack trips to manicured arenas built for serious training. Few states put wild backcountry and world-class facilities this close together.

The Adirondack Park dominates the north: millions of protected acres, and some of the best trail riding and multi-day pack-trip country in the East. Guest ranches up here trade on rustic charm and distance from everything. The Catskills, further south, run a similar program on more accessible terms, a well-worn network of trails and long views, with stables built around guided rides and vacation stays in a region that has been hosting visitors for a very long time.

The Hudson Valley is the state's equestrian corridor. Fertile farmland within striking distance of the metro area has made it a hub for riding academies, high-end boarding and training barns, and event venues, most of them working in English disciplines, hunter/jumper and dressage above all. West of there, the Finger Lakes pair vineyards and glacial lakes with a growing set of equestrian facilities, where a trail ride can genuinely pass through wine country.

Across all of it runs a long tradition of horsemanship, carried by historic family operations on one end and modern purpose-built facilities on the other. Whoever you are (a rider chasing intensive training, an afternoon on the trail, or a good home for your own horse), the state's range is wide enough that the search is about fit, not availability. Equine welfare and rider education are taken seriously here, and it shows in the barns.

  • Equine Infectious Anemia (Coggins Test)

    Any horse entering New York State or traveling within the state to an event, public gathering, or facility must possess a current negative Coggins test certificate, performed within the last 12 months. This is a crucial health requirement.

  • Helmet Use Law for Minors

    New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1265 requires all persons under the age of eighteen to wear an ASTM/SEI-approved (ASTM F1163) equestrian helmet when riding a horse, and General Business Law § 396-dd requires commercial horse providers to furnish a compliant helmet at no charge beyond the rental to any rider under eighteen. Many commercial operations extend this safety policy to all riders.

  • Equine Activity Liability Warning Signage

    While not a direct requirement for visitors, operators in New York are required by General Obligations Law § 18-303 to post warning signs regarding the inherent risks of equine activities to receive statutory liability protection. Visitors should be aware of these signs at equestrian facilities.

02Is a Coggins test required for horses brought into New York?
Yes. Any horse entering New York State (or traveling within it to an event, show, or boarding facility), needs a current negative Coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia, typically performed within the past 12 months.
03Are helmets required for riders in New York?
State law requires helmets for all riders under 18, and many commercial operations, trail stables and lesson barns alike, extend that rule to everyone in the saddle. Check your facility's policy, and wear one regardless.
04Can I ride my own horse on public trails in New York?
Yes, on many designated multi-use trails in New York State Parks and on Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) lands. Verify the specific trail's regulations and any permit requirements with the managing agency before you haul out.
05Which riding disciplines are most popular in New York?
Both English and Western have deep followings. Hunter/jumper and dressage dominate the Hudson Valley and the suburbs; Western trail and pleasure riding hold the rural and mountainous parts of the state.
06Are there equestrian camps for children in New York?
Plenty. Summer camps for kids and teens run across the state at every skill level, typically combining daily riding lessons with horse care and horsemanship, an immersive way for young riders to get real time around horses.
