About Colorado

Colorado gives a horse a lot of country to work with: the Front Range foothills, the high parks and river valleys of the Western Slope, the shortgrass prairie running east toward Kansas. Trails thread through national forests, BLM land, and state parks by the mile, and the towns in between have kept a working horse culture alive: brand inspections, hay fields, arenas at the county fairgrounds. You can ride here at 5,000 feet or at timberline, and the two feel like different states.

Guest ranches anchor the summer trade, especially around Steamboat Springs, Aspen, and the San Juans. A typical week means mornings in the saddle through alpine meadows or along rivers like the Arkansas or the Colorado, afternoons back at the lodge. Day operations fill in everywhere else: hourly and half-day rides out of stables near the red rock around Grand Junction, or under the ponderosa outside Colorado Springs. Most keep a string quiet enough for first-timers and a few horses with more go for riders who ask.

Lessons and boarding concentrate along the Front Range corridor from Fort Collins down to Pueblo, where barns teach Western pleasure, reining, dressage, and show jumping, and full training programs are easy to find. At the other end of the spectrum sit the pack-trip outfitters, the ones who load mules and take you a week deep into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass or the Weminuche Wilderness, country you cannot reach any other way short of walking it.

What holds it all together is infrastructure: open space that stayed open, a licensing system for outfitters, and enough farriers, vets, and hay growers to support horses from the eastern plains to the base of the fourteeners. Fall aspen rides, summer pack trips, winter work in an indoor arena, the state has a season and a setting for each, and an operation already running it.

  • Colorado Outfitter License

    Any individual or business operating commercial trail rides, pack trips, or other guided equestrian activities for compensation in Colorado must register as a licensed outfitter with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), Office of Outfitters Registration. This ensures adherence to safety standards and operational guidelines.

  • Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) Test

    Horses entering Colorado from out-of-state are required to have a current (within 12 months) negative Coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). Many boarding and training facilities within the state also require an annual negative Coggins test for all resident horses.

  • Equine Activity Liability Signage

    Under Colorado's Equine Inherent Risk Act, equine activity sponsors and professionals are generally required to post specific warning signs at their premises. These signs inform participants of the inherent risks associated with equine activities and the limitations of liability for operators.

  • Brand Inspection

    Horses transported across state lines into or out of Colorado, or those being sold, may be subject to brand inspection by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. This process verifies ownership and helps prevent livestock theft. Always verify current requirements before transporting horses.

01Do I need to bring my own horse for trail riding or guest ranch stays?
No. Nearly every trail stable and guest ranch in Colorado keeps its own string, with horses matched to rider experience. Many will also accommodate experienced riders hauling their own, but confirm that policy first, since extra fees and health paperwork usually apply.
02Are there riding opportunities for beginners and children?
Plenty. Trail stables keep gentle horses and run guided rides at a walk, riding academies teach from the ground up, and many guest ranches have kids' programs or supervised pony rides. A complete beginner can have a good first day almost anywhere in the state.
03What is the typical riding attire for trail rides in Colorado?
Long pants, jeans work fine, closed-toe shoes with a small heel (boots are better), and layers for mountain weather. Helmets are strongly encouraged and often mandatory for minors; some outfits provide them, others expect you to bring your own, so ask before you go.
04Can I find English riding lessons and facilities in Colorado?
