Best Time to Go
Mountain West & Rockies (CO, WY, MT, ID, UT)
High-country riding lives and dies by the snowpack, so trails open as the melt clears the passes and close when the first storms roll in. That makes June through September the heart of the guest- and dude-ranch season. Winter doesn’t end riding. It moves it into heated arenas, plus the occasional sleigh ride.

Common questions
- When is dude-ranch season in the Rockies?
- Roughly mid-June through September, when the snow has cleared the high trails and nights are mild. Many ranches run a tight Memorial Day–to–Labor Day calendar and fill their best summer weeks far in advance.
- When do high-country trails open for horseback riding?
- It depends on the snowpack. The passes clear as the melt comes off, so lower valleys open first and the highest trails can stay closed into late spring. Once they’re clear, June through September offers long days and dry footing.
- Can you ride in the Mountain West in winter?
- Trail riding pauses once the high country fills with snow, but the season doesn’t fully stop. Heated indoor arenas carry on through winter, with the occasional sleigh ride mixed in.
