When to go

High-country riding lives and dies by the snowpack, so trails open as the melt clears the passes and close when the first storms roll in. That makes June through September the heart of the guest- and dude-ranch season. Winter doesn’t end riding. It moves it into heated arenas, plus the occasional sleigh ride.

The desert flips the usual calendar: the cool months are prime and high summer is the off-season. From October through April, dry trails and comfortable temperatures make for some of the best riding in the country. By July, midday heat is genuinely dangerous for horses, so locals ride at dawn or trailer up to cooler high country.

Mild, Mediterranean weather gives the coast one of the longest riding seasons anywhere. Green hills and firm footing make spring and early fall the standouts; the wet winter season can soften trails for days, which is when all-weather and covered arenas earn their keep.

Mild winters make the Southeast a sneaky-good cold-month destination, while summer humidity, heat, and biting flies push rides to the early morning. Spring and fall are the sweet spots, warm and blooming and not yet oppressive.

Four-season country runs a classic late-spring-through-fall trail calendar. Once the ground firms up after the spring thaw, riding is excellent into October; deep winter brings frozen footing and snow, which is exactly when indoor arenas, lesson programs, and dressage barns do their biggest business.
