Western / Reining in Missouri

Missouri riding splits between two worlds: the old, worn-down Ozark Mountains in the south and the river plains along the Missouri and Mississippi. The Show-Me State has farm country in its bones, and the horse culture shows it. Its position in the middle of the country makes it an easy haul from almost anywhere, and its public land (national forest, state parks), gives riders real ground to cover, whether the plan is a hard trail weekend, professional training, or a guest-ranch stay.

South of the Missouri River, the Ozark Highlands take over: dissected plateaus, spring-fed rivers like the Current and Jacks Fork, and forest that closes over the trail. Much of the Mark Twain National Forest sits here, carrying hundreds of miles of multi-use trail open to horses. This is the state's adventure riding: steep climbs, long overlooks, and terrain that supports genuine multi-day pack trips. The guest ranches in this country lean Western, and the wildlife comes with the territory.
