Trail Riding in Minnesota

Minnesota earns the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" name, but for riders the water is only part of the story. The Arrowhead Region climbs toward Lake Superior in rock and pine; the southwest flattens into prairie; the central and southern counties carry hardwood forest between farm fields. Each landscape holds its own barns: guest ranches in the Brainerd Lakes country, trail stables working the Mississippi River bluffs, and boarding facilities serving the horse-dense communities around the Twin Cities.

Public land does a lot of the work here. State parks and forests, the Paul Bunyan State Trail, the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood Forest, anchor thousands of miles of multi-use trail open to horses. Layer a strong local riding culture on top of that infrastructure and Minnesota holds its own as a destination, for weekend trail riders and serious competitors alike. The operations run the gamut: small family stables teaching lessons and leading local rides, larger guest ranches booking multi-day stays.
