Dressage in Iowa

Corn gets the headlines, but Iowa hides better riding country than most people expect. The Loess Hills stack up along the western edge (steep, narrow ridges of wind-blown silt found almost nowhere else on earth), while the Driftless Area in the northeast, never flattened by glaciers, keeps its rugged bluffs and deep river valleys. Between those two edges sits a working equestrian state: guest-experience ranches, competitive riding academies, and a long roster of state parks and county conservation areas with maintained horse trails.

Where the horses live tracks where the people live. Around Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City, boarding and training barns run deep in both English and Western disciplines: clinics, shows, and full lesson programs are standard. Get away from the corridors, especially south and west, and the business shifts to guest ranches and trail-riding stables that sell the landscape itself: open pasture, timbered draws, and the odd geology that makes riders do a double-take in a state they assumed was flat.
