Trail Riding in New Jersey

New Jersey packs more horse country into its borders than the turnpike view suggests. The northern Skylands roll out wooded hills and old hunt country; the southern Pine Barrens spread flat, sandy trails through pine and cedar for mile after quiet mile. In between sit historic estates, high-performance show barns, rustic trail stables, and boarding farms tucked well away from the traffic, a working equestrian landscape in a state most people cross without noticing it.

Up north, the Skylands and Highlands hold the state's English riding tradition. Towns like Chester, Far Hills, and Bedminster anchor a countryside where foxhunting and eventing have deep roots, and the region's hunter/jumper and dressage barns still carry that lineage. Wooded state parks and forests offer trails with real terrain, good schooling ground for riders with competitive ambitions and honest miles for everyone else.
