Western / Reining in Idaho

Horse country doesn't get much bigger than Idaho. The Sawtooths and the Bitterroots wall off the high country, the Snake River Plain carries the farms and the towns, and in between sits some of the most horse-dependent terrain left in the lower 48: mountains, timber, and river canyons where a good trail horse is still the most practical way in. You can ride alpine trails in the morning shadow of granite peaks or school in a valley arena, and the state has an operation built for either ambition.

The backcountry is where Idaho's outfitters earn their reputation. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness anchors a pack-trip trade based out of towns like Stanley and McCall, multi-day trips into country no vehicle can reach, with river crossings on the order of the Salmon. It works because the horsemanship tradition here runs deep: seasoned guides, mountain-broke horses, and stock strings that know the trails better than the maps do.
