Trail Riding in Arkansas

They call Arkansas the "Natural State," and from the saddle the name earns itself. The Ozarks rise in the north (limestone bluffs, hardwood forest, water so clear you can count the gravel), while the Ouachitas run east-west across the state's western half in long quartz ridges under pine. Between them, the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests hold thousands of miles of multi-use trail. Rides pass along the Buffalo National River and by old homesteads, and the ground itself keeps changing under your horse's feet.

The operations match the terrain. Guest ranches near Eureka Springs and Mena run full riding vacations: guided trail rides, lodging, sometimes a cattle drive. Trail-riding stables scattered through the state parks and national forest country handle hourly and half-day rides for whoever shows up. Around Little Rock, Fayetteville, and Fort Smith, riding academies and training barns teach English and Western disciplines and board horses for local owners.
