Ranch Stays in South Dakota

Ponderosa pine, granite spires, prairie that runs to the horizon, South Dakota gives a rider three states' worth of country in one. The Black Hills anchor the western edge with forested mountain trails, the Badlands erode into sculpted rock just east of them, and the Missouri River cuts the whole state in half on its way south. The disciplines sort themselves along geography: the ranching west leans hard Western (reining, ranch work, trail), while dressage and hunter/jumper barns turn up more often in the populated eastern corridors. Both traditions get taught seriously; you just find them in different zip codes.
