Pack Trips in Alaska

Scale is the first thing Alaska teaches a rider. In the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, barns and stables cluster around Palmer and Wasilla with the Chugach Mountains standing over the paddocks, and from Anchorage the same range opens onto trails through boreal forest and up over mountain passes. Rides here pass glaciers, follow rivers like the Knik, and share the country with moose and bear. So much of the state remains undeveloped that every equestrian operation builds preparedness into the trip itself, this is not a place that forgives casual planning.

The riding community is smaller than anywhere in the Lower 48 and tighter for it, concentrated in Southcentral. Riding academies teach English and Western disciplines to locals and visitors, and boarding and training barns handle the real work of keeping horses sound through a climate that tests both animal and owner. Anchorage and Fairbanks put arenas and lesson programs within reach; drive an hour past either and the trails turn genuinely wild.
