Riding Lessons in Alabama

Alabama runs from the tail end of the Appalachians down to the coastal plain, and the riding changes with the land. Up north, forest trails drop into deep ravines and pass waterfalls; through the central Black Belt, the hills roll out long and easy under old farm country. That spread of terrain supports every kind of equestrian operation the state has: guest ranches, trail-riding stables working the wild edges, and academies teaching horsemanship in a half-dozen disciplines. A rider can pick the Alabama they want.

Public land does much of the heavy lifting. The William B. Bankhead National Forest, home of the wild Sipsey Fork, and the Talladega National Forest carry miles of trail through dense woodland, prime country for guided rides and multi-day pack trips. Private facilities fill in around them: boarding barns, training operations, clinics, and competitive venues serving horse owners who live here and visitors passing through.
