Hunter / Jumper in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, and its riders have learned not to care. Coastal paths in South County, forested routes through the western interior, historic farmland in between, the trail network punches well above the state's acreage. English riding dominates, with academies and hunter/jumper barns thick on the ground, though Western communities are gaining. The mix of woodland, farm country, and Atlantic edge gives riders more variety per mile than almost anywhere in New England.

The horsiest ground is rural western and southern Rhode Island (Exeter, Foster, Richmond), where the state's larger boarding barns, training centers, and trail stables sit against extensive state management areas laced with connected trail. Miles of unpaved road and designated equestrian trail run through dense forest here, quiet enough for a green horse and long enough for a conditioning ride. The land rolls from open hills into deep woods, and the riding changes with it.
